Abstract

Traditional birth attendants are a medium between the community and the formal healthcare system. They provide support and care to pregnant women and their newborn babies, often in areas with limited access to healthcare. Although they may not have the same level of medical training as doctors or nurses, their experience and knowledge are valued by the communities they serve. The paper states that traditional birth attendants play a vital role in rural and developing areas by providing essential care and preserving cultural traditions. It recommends government support and collaboration with the formal healthcare system through resources, training in basic healthcare practices and integration into formal health services to improve maternal outcomes and standard procedures during pregnancy, labour and postnatal care.
