Parental Expectations, Religious Condemnation and Avoidance of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Among Female Students in Private Universities in Delta State
Abstract
This study investigated parental expectations, religious condemnation and avoidance of sexually transmitted diseases among female students in private universities in Delta State. The study adopted correlational survey design. The population was 5,211 female students in private universities in Delta State in the 2022/2023 academic year, while 1,042 students were sampled using stratified random sampling. The instrument was Parental Expectations, Religious Condemnation and Avoidance of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Scale. Out of 1,042 copies administered, 1,031 were retrieved. Mean rating and standard deviation answered the research questions while Pearson Product Moment Correlation tested hypotheses. Findings showed significant relationships between parental expectations, religious condemnation and avoidance of sexually transmitted diseases. The study recommended that female students abstain from sex until marriage, avoid casual sex and adhere to cultural and religious practices to avoid sexually transmitted diseases.
