Abstract

This study investigated family characteristics, specifically parental criminality and parenting skills, as predictors of school-related gender-based violence among adolescents in Oyo State. A mixed method design was used. Multistage sampling selected five educational zones out of ten in Oyo State and two schools from each zone. Three thousand students were selected and 2,989 responses were used for analysis. Instruments measured parental criminality, parenting skills and school-related gender-based violence. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson product moment correlation, t-test and multiple regression, while qualitative data were content-analysed. Findings showed significant positive relationships and significant joint contribution of family characteristics to school-related gender-based violence among adolescents. The study recommended that government, parents and policy makers take cognizance of these factors.
