Push and Pull Factors as Predictors of Migration Among Health Care Workers in Tertiary Hospitals in Ibadan
Abstract
This study examined push and pull factors influencing migration intentions among healthcare workers in public tertiary hospitals in Ibadan. A descriptive survey research design and multistage sampling procedure selected 100 healthcare workers. Self-developed validated questionnaires, Push and Pull Factors Questionnaire and Migration Intention Scale, were used. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, t-test and multiple regression at 0.05 level of significance. Findings indicated dissatisfaction with job conditions, poor work-life balance and inadequate salary among respondents. Pull factors such as job satisfaction, working conditions and career development opportunities, and push factors such as political instability, weather condition and insecurity, significantly contributed to migration. Female healthcare workers reported higher tendency to migrate. The study recommended policy interventions to improve working conditions, salaries, career development opportunities and staff support systems.
